Racing squad
Lead Coach: John Hickling
Men's captain: Connor Foxall & Ben White
Women's captain: Nicole Robson & Thea Guy
Email: information@furnivall.org
The racing squad is designed for women and men who have previous rowing experience and want to race in a competitive yet friendly environment. Our current squad contains a wide range of abilities: from those who raced competitively at school or university to graduates from our Learn to Row course who have experience in our development squad.
The purpose of the racing squad is to further develop your technique, fitness and confidence both on the water and in the gym in order to prepare crews for racing. The squad races at all levels, from novice to masters, in both sweep and sculling events, and from singles to eights. If you have never sculled before, that is not a problem, we will teach you!
We are a very friendly bunch and enjoy lunch at a local café or a drink at one of the many Hammersmith pubs along the Thames after outings, alongside club socials.
If you're an experienced rower (sweep and/or sculling) or cox and you think Furnivall might be the club for you, we'd encourage you to drop us a line using the contact details at the top of this page. We always welcome potential new members to visit us in order to meet the squad members and see the facilities. Looking forward to meeting you!
In the meantime, if you want to find out more, please email us using the contact details above or have a look at the FAQs below for more details.
Training schedule
At Furnivall we believe in being able to fit rowing in around work and life. We encourage members to commit as much as they can but understand when life gets in the way. FSC offers something for everyone: whether you want to be training every day or can only commit to a few days a week.
What are the training times?
Squad water outings are on Thursday evenings, Saturdays at 8.30am and Sundays at 9am. No early morning starts for us!
Do I have to race?
We have structured our squads at FSC so that everyone in the women’s and men’s squad will get to race at some point in the year. This could be at the top-level regattas, head races or local regattas. The races that you want to target should go hand-in-hand with how often you train in a week. If you are looking to row recreationally, rather than race, please get in touch to have a chat about options.
Do you do sweep rowing and sculling?
Yes, we encourage both at FSC. If you are an experienced sweep rower but haven’t sculled before, that is fine: it won’t take you long to pick it up! We tend to sweep row from December when we shift to 8s for the head season. After this we move back to smaller boats with a mix of sweep and sculling.
Do you have a masters' or vets' squad?
Currently, our masters are either members of the racing squad or are social scullers. We welcome members of all ages so please get in touch to have a chat about options.
How much is the membership?
We are one of the most competively-priced clubs in London because we believe that finances shouldn't pose a barrier to rowing. Subscription fees for all membership categories can be found on our Membership & Fees page.
