Development squad

Squad coach: Frances Sealy

Email: information@furnivall.org

The Development Squad is specifically for those who are in the early stages of their rowing careers and have perhaps just completed a learn to row course, or have one to two year’s experience rowing. The purpose of the squad is to build on the foundations learnt at the very beginning by developing technique and confidence on the water and in the gym. We aim for members to progress quickly gain racing experience in eights the winter head races (Quintin Head, Hammersmith Head, and WeHORR/HORR) and regatta racing experience in small boats in the spring and summer. Members "graduate" to the Men’s/Women’s Racing Squad or Club Squad based on technical ability, fitness, strength, coachability, and commitment at set times of the year.

This squad trains on the water on Saturdays and Sundays at 12:30 in addition to a minimum of two in-person coached land training sessions per week.

The squad is a very friendly and sociable bunch with always something happening - whether that's going for a squad lunch post outing or some drinks by the river.

There are a maximum of 42 places on the Development Squad every year. If you want to find out more, please email us using the contact details above or have a look at the FAQs below for more details.

What are the training times?

The erg session is on Tuesday at either 6:30 or 7:15pm and the water sessions are on  Saturday at 12:30 (double outing with a break in between) and Sunday at 12:30 (single outing).

Do you do sweep rowing and sculling?

Yes we offer both at Furnivall and you'll be doing both within the dev squad. If you haven’t done one of them before, then don’t worry - we can help. If you have any concerns, just let us know.

Can I progress/ compete at Furnivall?

The Furnivall Development Squad produces some of the fastest novice crews in the country. Our Dev Squad women were the fastest novice club 8+ in the winter head races in both 2023 and 2024.

What if I am not as fast a learner as some of my squad mates?

Do not worry. Everyone goes at their own pace and will pick up technique at a different rate. The important thing is to focus and take on feedback by the coach which will help you to improve.
