Women’s Head 2022
Saturday saw 19LM turn into a hive of activity for the first Women’s Eights Head since 2018. Boating for all of our visitors was magnificently organised by Sol and our wonderful volunteers (we’ve already had 5* reviews on Rowing Trip Advisor).
FSC boated two women’s eights: an exciting mix of new recruits, Learn to Row 2021 grads and stalwart Furnivallistas. Race day was mostly dry and fine, but with a tasty southerly breeze. Both W1 and W2 enjoyed their races - as much as one can enjoy rowing into the Tideway masquerading as the North Sea after Hammersmith Bridge. W1 had a good race, with all in the crew agreeing it was our best race of the season so far. Unfortunately we ended up in a bit of a time gap and didn’t get the excitement of having crews around us. Nevertheless, we pushed on with Ben’s words “this is the last 1k of winter racing” ringing in our ears. On the row back, W1 turned cheerleaders for W2 who were involved in some hectic racing near Barn Elms. Unfortunately, W2’s opposition were so intimidated by the war cries of W1 that they drove straight into W2. A huge shout out goes out to Jools for extricating W2 safely and encouraging them onto the finish. Back in Hammersmith, the disco ball was on, the kitchen was busy and the women’s squad set about celebrating the end of head season. The squad would like to give their special thanks at this point to Andrew for sourcing artisanal salt and limes to accompany their celebratory tequilas.
The squad have been thoroughly enjoying training in the club’s beautiful new facilities and are looking forward to getting stuck into preparation for the regatta season, including fundraising for a new women’s eight.
Thank you to coaches Michael, Matt and Mike, cox Josh, and women’s captain Lucy for all their hard work.
